The Purrfect Situation for Cat Lovers

Share this article:

Growing up, I always yearned for a dog, but my mom didn't think I was ready for the responsibility. Sure, having a dog seems like all fun and games, but taking care of one is a serious commitment. You see pet owners going to lengths to make all sorts of arrangements for their pets, especially when they get older and need more attention. Pets are huge mood boosters, these cuddly companions provide great help to our mental well-being as well. There are so many perks that come with owning a pet, yet I cannot stress how important and huge a responsibility is again and again.

Calling All Cat Lovers

You probably already know the new legislation regarding cat ownership in Singapore. But for the benefit of those who don't, or are living under a rock, Singapore is finally legalising keeping cats as pets. HDB homeowners will be allowed to keep up to two cats in their homes, and private homes will be allowed up to three. Rule to kick in on 1 September, there will be a two-year transition period where existing cat owners will have to meet licensing and microchipping requirements. Owners with more than the cat limits now will be allowed to keep their cats as long as they register the cats and get them licensed during this period.

As with many things in Singapore, it will be an offence to keep unlicensed pet cats after the transitional period and offenders will be subjected to fines of up to $5,000.

More on the new cat ownership rules here:

If you're thinking about getting a pet (cat or dog), this article is a must-read. We'll cover things that you should take note of and some great tips on making your home more pet-friendly.

Understanding HDB Rules

Dogs:

  • Allowed Breeds: HDB flats allow only one dog from a list of pre-approved small breeds. There are a total of 62 small dog breeds listed and it includes breeds like the Miniature Schnauzer, Chihuahua, and Pomeranian.
  • Licensing: You must licence your dog with the Animal and Veterinary Services (AVS) of Singapore. Licensing ensures that dogs are vaccinated against rabies and helps in identifying lost pets.

Cats:

  • New Ruling: Under the new regulation, HDB owners are allowed to keep up to two cats
  • Licensing: Cats are to be licensed with AVS to increase the accountability of owners and also keep up with the sterilisation status of the cats.

Pet-Friendly Condominiums

Policies Vary

Check Before Moving: Regulations in private condos can vary widely. Most of the condos allow pets but there might be some compounds within the condo that they might be restricted from. It is always best to check with the condo's management before making commitments.

Pet Facilities: Some condos offer pet-friendly amenities such as pet parks, grooming salons, and even pet day-care services.

Designing Pet-Friendly Spaces

Flooring

  • Durable and Easy to Clean: Opt for scratch-resistant and easy-to-clean flooring like tiles, laminate, or vinyl. These materials handle pet messes better than carpets.

Windows and Balconies

  • Safety First: Install pet-safe screens or grilles to prevent your pets from falling. This is crucial for high-rise apartments.

Furniture

  • Pet-Resistant Materials: Choose furniture made from durable materials. Leather and microfiber are good options as they are easier to clean and less likely to get damaged.
  • Removable Covers: Furniture with removable, washable covers makes cleaning up pet hair and dirt much easier.

Pet Amenities

  • Designated Areas: Create specific areas for feeding, sleeping, and playing. This helps in keeping your home organised and ensures your pet has its own space.
  • Invest in Pet Furniture: Items like cat trees, scratching posts, and dog beds can make your pet feel more comfortable and keep them entertained.

Creating a Safe Environment

  • Hazard-Free Home: Ensure harmful substances like cleaning agents, small objects, and certain plants are out of reach. Secure trash bins and keep cords and wires tucked away.
  • Childproof Latches: Consider using childproof latches on cabinets to prevent pets from getting into potentially dangerous items.

Neighbourhood Considerations

  • Pet-Friendly Areas: Look for neighbourhoods with nearby parks, pet-friendly cafes, and veterinary clinics. A supportive community can make pet ownership more enjoyable.
  • Green Spaces: Having parks or open areas nearby provides your pet with spaces to exercise and socialise.

Legal Responsibilities

  • Licensing and Vaccination: Make sure your pet is licensed and vaccinated. Microchipping your pets is also advisable for easy identification if they get lost.
  • Adhering to Local Laws: Follow local laws regarding pet care, including noise control and cleanliness, to avoid fines and ensure a harmonious living environment for everyone.

Pet or no pet

As you can already tell from the list above, owning a pet is not a walk in the park. After reading this, I'm sure you must be thinking there's so much to do as a pet owner, but how many of us can truly resist these fur babies?
